This paper assesses the influence of students’ personal, family and academic characteristics on different measures of educational outcome (exam results and likelihood of passing), by using several econometric techniques. In particular, it will pay attention to the relationship between these measures of educational success and variables determining access to University (pre-university exam results, acceptance by institutions of first choice, etc.). The data used for this paper come from the individual records of the group of first time enrolled students in the University of Malaga in 1996/97.

Key words: success at university, educational production function, quantile regression.
